When Should You Hire a Branding Studio?

It may be time to hire a branding studio when your brand no longer reflects your business or you need professional help moving forward.
Three different chairs illustrating how to find the right branding studio for your business.

Maybe you’re starting something new. Maybe your business has evolved but your brand hasn’t kept up. Or maybe you’ve reached the point where doing everything yourself just isn’t cutting it anymore.

That’s usually when it makes sense to bring in some help.

At Steady Studio, we work with businesses in Vancouver, the Tri-Cities, throughout BC, and across Canada on branding, graphic design and websites. And we’ve learned that hiring the right creative partner isn’t necessarily about finding the biggest agency, the cheapest freelancer or the fanciest office.

It’s about finding the right fit.

What does a branding studio actually do?

A branding studio helps businesses define who they are, communicate what makes them different and build a visual identity that brings those ideas to life.

That can involve some pretty big questions. Who are you? What do you stand for? Who are you trying to reach? Why should anyone care?

Depending on what your business needs, a branding studio can help with:

  • Brand strategy and market positioning
  • Brand story: mission, vision, values, purpose, and culture
  • Logo design
  • Colour and typography
  • Visual identity systems
  • Brand guidelines
  • Graphic design and marketing materials
  • Packaging
  • Website design
  • Photography, illustration and other creative assets

It’s worth making an important distinction here: branding and marketing aren’t the same thing.

Branding defines who you are and how you present yourself. Marketing gets that brand in front of people.

There’s plenty of overlap, but at Steady, our wheelhouse is branding and design. We help you figure out what you want to say and give you the tools to say it clearly, consistently and beautifully.

How do you know when it’s time to hire a branding studio?

It’s time to hire a branding studio when the way your business looks, sounds or presents itself no longer reflects the business you’ve become.

Sometimes the signs are obvious. Other times, there’s just a nagging feeling that something isn’t quite right.

If any of this sounds familiar, you might be ready for professional branding help:

  • Your business has changed, but your brand hasn’t
  • You’re struggling to explain what makes you different
  • Your logo, visual identity or website no longer reflects the quality of your business
  • Your marketing materials all look like they came from different companies
  • You’re attracting the wrong customers
  • You’re embarrassed to send someone to your website
  • You know something isn’t working, but you’re too close to the business to see what it is

You don’t necessarily need to know what the solution is before you reach out.

In fact, figuring that out is part of the job.

Should you hire a freelancer, boutique branding studio or large agency?

Freelancers, boutique branding studios and large agencies can all produce great work. The right choice depends on the size and complexity of your project, the expertise you need and the kind of working relationship you want.

We’re obviously a little biased toward that middle column. Businesses often assume they have two choices: hire a freelancer or hire a big, fancy agency. But there’s a third option: the small-but-mighty boutique studio.

What are the benefits of working with a boutique branding studio?

A boutique branding studio can offer the breadth of experience of a creative team while maintaining a close, collaborative relationship with its clients.

Being small doesn’t mean only working with small businesses, either. At Steady, we look at what you’re trying to accomplish, what it will take to get there and whether we’re the right people to help.

One of the things we value most about being a small studio is continuity. The people you meet at the beginning are the same people digging into your business, developing the ideas and designing the work. They’re also the people who stick with you and support you as your business grows.

We get to know your business. You get to know us. We can challenge each other’s ideas, have honest conversations and build something together.

Some of our favourite client relationships have lasted for years. We like going steady. It’s right there in the name.

Will a branding studio really understand your business?

A good branding studio should have a process for learning your business before it starts designing anything.

We understand the fear. It’s hard to let go of control and put your trust in someone else. Nobody knows your business better than you do, and we wouldn’t pretend otherwise.

Our job isn’t to walk into the room and magically know everything about your company. Our job is to ask the right questions, listen carefully, do our research and bring an outside perspective to something you’re understandably very close to.

At Steady Studio, that process starts with Brand Discovery. We dig into your business, your audience, your competitors, your history, your personality and where you want to go next.

Sometimes what makes your business special has become so familiar to you that you don’t even realize it’s special. That’s part of the value of bringing in an outside perspective.

Then we collaborate with you to turn what we’ve learned into something meaningful, distinctive and useful.

What should you look for when hiring a branding studio?

Look for a branding studio with strong work, a clear process, relevant experience and, just as importantly, people you actually want to work with.

A beautiful portfolio is important, but it doesn’t tell you everything. Before hiring a branding studio, consider:

  • The work: Do you see quality, originality and attention to detail?
  • The thinking: Can they explain why they made the decisions they made?
  • The process: Is there a clear approach to discovery, strategy, design and feedback?
  • The experience: Have they successfully solved problems of similar complexity?
  • The reviews: What do past clients say about actually working with them?
  • The fit: Do you actually like these people?

That last one matters more than you might think.

Brand development can involve some vulnerable conversations about your business, your ambitions, what’s working and what isn’t. You’re going to spend a fair bit of time together.

You don’t need to become best friends, but it certainly helps if you enjoy being in the same Zoom meeting.

Is Steady Studio the right branding studio for you?

Steady Studio is a good fit for businesses that value collaboration, distinctive design and a close working relationship with the people creating their brand.
We’re probably not the right fit if you’re looking for the cheapest logo you can get by Friday.

We’re also not a 50-person marketing agency equipped to plan your national television campaign.

Instead, we’re that third option.

Small enough that you’ll know exactly who you’re working with. Experienced enough to tackle some pretty big projects. And curious enough to really get to know the business behind the brand.

We want to create a brand that feels like you, connects with the people you’re trying to reach and gives your business something solid to build on.

And when you work with Steady, we make sure you have some fun along the way, too.

Are you ready to go Steady?

If your business has outgrown its brand, you’re starting something new, or you just have that nagging feeling that something isn’t quite working, let’s talk.

You don’t need to know whether you need a new logo, a refreshed visual identity or a complete rebrand before you call us. We’ll help you figure out where you are, where you want to go and what it will take to get there.
